Tsukihime – One of Visual Novel’s Classic

Tsukihime getting an OFFICIAL English translation is kind of a big deal

Visual novels may be a niche genre in Malaysia, with a small but dedicated fanbase, but they enjoy immense popularity in Japan. Tsukihime, originally released in 2000 and remake in 2021, has recently received an official English translation. This offers a perfect opportunity for newcomers to experience this classic and dive into the rich world of visual novels.

(Official English Released on 27 June 2024)

Fans of Melty Blood and Fate franchise will find the game oddly similar – artstyle and some of the characters, because they are in fact from the same creator! It’s no stretch to say that Tsukihime is a cornerstone of the industry.

As previously mention, despite the game blowing up in Japan, Tsukihime never had an official English translation, with the task of preserving the game online falling to the diehard fans.

What’s the plot?

The story follows Shiki Tohno, a teenager who secretly harbours a mysterious condition that allows him to see 'lines of death' on everything around him after a near-death experience. Shiki's quiet life is disrupted when his estranged family suddenly calls for his return. Soon after, a chance encounter with a mysterious girl drags him into a dark world of family secrets, gruesome revelations, and vampires.

* We wish to note that Tsukihime – A Piece of Blue Glass Moon is not for the faint of heart or squeamish readers. It does not shy away from vividly depicting horrific and gory scenes. However, if you can stomach these, you will be rewarded with an immersive story that delves into complex themes of identity, morality, and the supernatural.

Rework Routes

Unlike the original game back in 2000s, the rework version will have you focus on only two possible routes; Arcueid and Ciel. – I apologize Akiha’s fans. With that said, despite the cut in content the game has added more to the story, also adding plot elements from the fighting game Melty Blood and the game’s prequel Witch on the Holy Night.

The Heroines

Arcueid Brunestud

Known for her striking beauty and extraordinary abilities, she is deeply entwined with the supernatural elements of the story. Her interactions with Shiki reveal a complicated personality, balancing a sense of otherworldly detachment with surprising moments of vulnerability and humanity.

Ciel

Ciel is shrouded with mystery, her dual life adding depth to the story. On one hand, she appears to be a diligent and reliable upperclassman, but beneath this façade lies a more complex and secretive persona. She becomes increasingly involved in Shiki’s life as he dives deeper into the mystery surrounding his own abilities and the secrets of his family.

Who Should try this game?

Fans of Visual Novels: Without saying, visual novel enthusiasts should give this reworked classic a chance to explore what changed the landscape of visual novels back in 2000.

Fans of Atlus Games: Interestingly, fans of Shin Megami Tensei and Persona may discover similarities in certain aspects of the story. I strongly recommend giving this game a chance.

Fans of Fate: Created by the same studio, Type-Moon, Tsukihime – A Piece of Blue Glass Moon share’ similar themes and storytelling styles found in the Fate series.

*The official English port for Fate/Stay Night is confirmed to release somewhere this year!
